Colpersys Four by Steve Symons is a new system commissioned for FON13. Based outdoors in the enclosed peace garden in Barrow Park, the audience used a smart phone app to control audio within a 4 channel sound system. By slowing interaction and only providing simple instrumentation Colpersys Four was intriguing to play solo but took on a whole new level when working with others. Strangely, for a ‘sound’ artist, Steve decided to remove himself as a sonic performer from this work; instead, he worked on creating a sense of sonic intent by curating a system of simple graphical interfaces that play and effect audio loops:
Looking to the FON artists for sound Steve worked collaboratively to develop the work further, creating a playground for both FON performers and audiences and so underlining the shared experience that lies at the heart of the work.
Steve is a sound artist and maker who is known for a series of sonic augmented reality artworks titled Aura and as a member of the sound art collective Owl Project. His recent solo project, Gigzine, explores interaction and alternative music/media distribution at live events.
